Students First and (un) democracy

So we all know that the election process has been undemocratic. We can see that here, here, and here.

And there is a new post on the New York discussion here.

I am going to quote some famous people that I happen to know.

Yoda said: "The dark side clouds everything, impossible to see the future is."

Overheard while walking by a ballot box: "I just realized today that I didn't receive a ballot for President"

Fraser of New York said: "The system is undemocratic and the choosing of the CRO by the incumbents makes it that way"

Brittany said: "I deem this election to be illogical captain"

William Shakespeare said: "Ambition should be made of sterner stuff."

Kriss Bacon said: he "would really appreciate the text of the notice of disqualifications for New yorks candidates"

Jac G said: "Tim Burton Fail.... wonderland = dissapointment"

  1. Yoda and Shakespeare should work on together on this issue.

  2. This is absolutly ridiculous.
the more i read and think about it, the more upset i get.

  3. A CRO is supposed to exercise personal neutrality when administering an election .. I'm not convinced our YFS CRO is in a position to claim impartiality because she is (1) appointed by the incumbent student government, 20/22 of whom are comprised of Students First members, and (2) operates from within the YFS offices, among 20 Students First members, one independent and one member of an opposition party.

Perhaps most discouraging though is that the same CRO was appointed once again without consideration for other candidates given the controversy that surrounded last years election.

  4. Party affiliation shouldn't divide those who care about the integrity of the YFS electoral process and those who don't ,if all of us have the best interests of York Students at heart.

  5. Been there, seen that... Totally agree with the quotes above. YFS elections is a big joke. It's like "We will let some opposition run - but only run, nothing else". They set rules for their own game and try to make it look like everything is fine. Well, things are not fine and it's not the first time we could see that. Too bad the university has so many students who don't care about where their money goes.

  6. The CRO levied demerit points on both sides. It's not the CROs fault that New York couldn't properly follow SIMPLE electoral rules that were spelt out at the all-candidates meeting.

  7. On one side New York wants the rules followed (tape issue), on the other they complain when it is followed (Newspaper distribution issue). Make up your mind New York. Hypocrisy oozes out of both sides.

  8. It was not the entire New York slate that handed out unapproved campaign material. I agree with the decision to disqualify those who did not follow the rules, but for those who did they should still be in the race

  9. In response to anonymous March 6, 2010 10:11pm:
I personally believe - especially consider the track record of complaints - that New York is right in wanting the proper tape on the ballot boxes to ensure that they cannot be tampered with.

And handing out points for handing out Excalibur? Seriously?

There is a small difference between ensuring ballots are not tampered with and handing out a newspaper. No one can say otherwise.

    These elections were undemocratic.

  10. Are you suggesting YFS is a democratically elected student government supported by actual students?

Next thing you will allege is students actually support giving student 'fees' for the left wing activist policies.

    Too funny.
