CFS taking after the Conservatives?

A little while ago I wrote an article called "This is when democracy dies". This article tells of the Canadian Federation of Students doing anything they can to avoid scrutiny (by blocking media coverage), avoid opposition, and ignore basic rules of what a majority vote is.

I see the same thing happening with the Conservative Government now. The Conservatives proroguing parliament are: avoiding scrutiny by the elected opposition members, they are straight out avoiding the opposition, and avoiding motions passed claiming "National Security".

Both of these Governments MUST become more accountable to their constituencies. If they do not they become more like a dictatorship than a democracy and this is something none of us wants. As Mr Warren Kinsella referring to the conservatives put it this is a "Denial of Democracy".

  1. i posted this on another page by accident but meant to post it here lol.

The interesting thing about administrations in power is to see if they choose between holding onto the values of fairness and accountability that they origionally preached about when they were in opposition or during elections, or they choose to hold onto power by any means necessary. usually the last option is too tempting for most and so they naturally compromise there origional position. however, the tactics they use in trying to hold onto power can be undemocratic, malicious and sometimes be a diservice to the very people they sought out to serve. Such as intimidation, harrasement, exclusion or calling everyone with a different opinion a conservative conspirater. Really this highlights the constant power struggle wthin democracy between the government in power and the opposition.
The problem with student opposition parties is that they are rarely interested, effective and committed enough within student politics to hold student leaders accountable
